Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) is a Transport Canada certified Response Organization, whose mandate is to ensure there is a state of preparedness in place and to mitigate the impact when an oil spill occurs. Our spill response team is responsible for protecting Canada’s West Coast. Our ability to take action early in an incident significantly reduces the negative impacts oil can have on the environment. Once on scene, WCMRC responders ensure that the situation is thoroughly and safely assessed, response strategies are carefully devised, and countermeasures are quickly deployed. WCMRC is hiring a Full Time Spill Response Technician – 60GT Master to join our spill response team in Sidney, BC.

Our spill response team is comprised of professionals with diverse skills and experience. Their ability to effectively manage and direct spill response procedures within the first few hours after response activation significantly reduces the negative impacts oil can have on the surrounding environment. On a spill site, WCMRC personnel work to ensure that the situation is thoroughly assessed, response strategies are carefully devised, and resultant countermeasures are quickly deployed.

The specific responsibilities for this position include:

  • Captain vessels safely and effectively, provide direction to crew members to accomplish all assignments, and maintain records of allocated personnel and resources.
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out with due regard to personal safety, the safety of others, and in line with company policies and procedures.
  • Provide safe, prompt and efficient support to spill incidents, exercises and preparedness projects.
  • Maintain spill response equipment to ensure all equipment is operational and response ready at all times.
  • Lead and supervise small teams.
  • Ensure crew is fully trained and successfully executes assigned tasks during exercises, drills and oil spill response operations.
  • Participate in exercises, trains contractors and WCMRC personnel.
  • Ensure completion of monthly work orders, vessel runs, annual equipment refits, vessel dry docking, and assist with regulatory inspections, i.e. Transport Canada Vessel Inspections.
  • Provide training to our new hires/ casuals/ contractors.

The successful candidate will possess a Master 60GT Domestic certificate issued by Transport Canada, a minimum of three years of previous experience with marine and small power equipment maintenance, working knowledge of local coastlines, and emergency response training and/or experience.  A Class 5 Drivers License is required.  Must be physically fit for work at sea in calm and rough waters and be willing and able to work outdoors under inclement weather. Also, must be capable of lifting and carrying up to 50lbs on a regular basis.  You will also need to be a collaborative team player who thrives on coordinating and interacting with multiple people on multiple projects, and who is able to manage shifting priorities.

WCMRC is hiring a Full-Time Spill Response Technician – Deckhand to join our spill response team in Beecher Bay, B.C.

On a spill site, WCMRC personnel work to ensure that the situation is thoroughly assessed, response strategies are carefully devised, and resultant countermeasures are quickly deployed.

Spill Response Technician Deckhands are responsible for:

  • Provide safe, prompt and efficient support to spill incidents, exercises and preparedness projects.
  • Act as a Deckhand on Spill Response Vessels.
  • Act as Master of small vessels.
  • Maintain spill response equipment to ensure all equipment is operational and response ready at all times.
  • Complete assigned work orders, vessel runs, annual equipment refits, vessel dry docking, and assist with regulatory inspections, i.e. Transport Canada Vessel Inspections and Class Inspections.
  • Conduct inventory checks of warehouse, vessels and trailers.
  • Provide training to our new hires/ casuals/ contractors.
  • Work on project teams and committees.
  • Compliance with Canada Labour Code and Canada Shipping Act during spill and non-spill activities.
  • Interact positively with the public and other stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Successful candidates will possess a high school diploma, must be physically fit for work at sea in calm and rough waters and be capable of lifting and carrying up to 50lbs on a regular basis.  Candidates must also be willing and able to work outdoors under inclement weather, hold a Class 5 driver’s license in good standing, possess a valid passport and be eligible to travel to the United States.

The following are considered assets: Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), Radio Operators Certificate (ROC-M), Marine Emergency Duties (MED A1/A3) certificate, previous experience with marine and small power equipment maintenance, Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO) and working knowledge of local coastlines, and emergency response training. You also need to be a collaborative team player who thrives on coordinating and interacting with multiple people and be comfortable managing shifting priorities.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Customer Service: Assist prospective students and customers in booking courses and training programs.
  • Front Desk Operations: Welcome guests, direct students to the correct classrooms, and manage reception duties.
  • Enrollment Assistance: Enroll students in our in-person and online courses, assist with accessing online materials, and create user accounts.
  • Database Management: Keep the student database updated and input data after each course/program.
  • Mail-Outs: Prepare packages for online courses and certificates.
  • General Support: Assist other office and admin staff with duties and errands, including minor cleaning and campus organization.
  • Errands: Run errands such as picking up textbooks from printers and dropping off packages at the post office.
What We Are Looking For:
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Outlook, Zoom, MS Word, MS Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and other business programs. Knowledge of Moodle or other LMS is an asset.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Customer Service: Excellent customer service skills and willingness to go the extra mile.
  • Self-motivation: Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently.
  • Interest in the Maritime Industry: Knowledge about or interest in the boating and marine industry is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Hourly Wage: Starting at $20.00 per hour, with increases after a successful probationary period. Wage is negotiable based on experience.
  • Additional Reimbursement: Annual pay increases, bonus pay based on business level and individual accomplishments, and overtime pay when required.

Work Schedule and Location:
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, usually 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

We are looking for additions to our team on the Pubnico Gemini. This operation involves live shellfish transport. All Crew members must operate safely at all times and abide by all Transport Canada Laws and Regulations.

Qualifications/Requirements

 

1st Mate – Fishing Master 4th Class or Watch Keeping Mate 150T – NC, Marine Advanced First Aid, all of which are required for the 1st Mate Position

Job Description/Duties/Responsibilities

The main operation is on and off-loading procedures, as well as deck work.

The vessel also conducts frequent anchoring and mooring operations, fendering and tying up other boats to offload.

Deployment of stabilizer assembly.

Navigational Watch Required, which means all crew must stand a watch.

Supplying Fleet with usual provisions and running errands.

General ship housekeeping and maintenance.

Applicants must be presentable and drug & alcohol-free.

Position to require shift work (e.g. 10 days on – 4 days off; 7 days on – 7 days off, etc.). Average
working days are likely to be up to 10-12 hours. Temporary contract from August 2024 to February 2025 with opportunity for continued full-time employment.

Position Requierments:

  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certification or Transport Canada
    equivalent
  • Minimum five years of experience operating comparable commercial vessels in similar
    conditions
  • Drug and alcohol testing in keeping with Woodfibre LNG requirements

Preferred Capabilities:

  • Experience with boat operation in Howe Sound
  • Experience working on large-scale construction projects
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract.

Priority is given to candidates who meet the following:

  • Priority placement will be given to (1) Squamish Nation members and (2) Indigenous
    candidates with demonstrated experience, competency, and a good safety track record.
  • Level 1 First Aid

Compensation:

$35/hour – $38.00/hour based on experience and training
Overtime per provincial standards (1.5x over 8hrs, 2x over 12hrs)
