Peter Jonker's Resume

Certificates:
Canadian ON1, Panamanian Unlimited Master. I have worked
in the maritime field since my early teens. As a teenager I sailed
with my father who was master for one of the companies that
later combined to form Nedlloyd (Nederland Line, Amsterdam;
Rotterdam Lloyd, Rotterdam). I worked on general cargo vessels,
coast guard ships, coastal supply vessels, tugs, log barges,
ferries, passenger vessels (Stena), ocean going dredgers
(Arctic), and high speed craft (SeaLink & HarbourLynx). I have
built fishing vessels to 65 feet and fished my boats to mid
Pacific. I delivered ships from Singapore to New Guinea, put
them into commission, hired and trained crews. I worked to
put ships into compliance with the International Safety
Management Code (ISM) and helped establish quality assurance
and management systems. I was superintendent for safety,
environment and training for P&O, Indonesia. I am a Transport
Canada approved training provider and hold a Provincial
instructors Diploma. I taught nautical courses at PMTC/BCIT,
Camosun College, and started the nautical program at North
Island College. I have courses approved by Transport Canada
& Industry Canada. I am a radio examiner for industry Canada.
I have been registered by the Private Post Secondary Education
Commission as a post secondary education provider. I am
approved to issue Transport Canada EXN 24 training certificates
for MED courses and have been authorized in the past to issue
High Speed Craft Type Ratings. I issue Radio Operator’s
Certificates for Industry Canada.

Work Experience
Sep 05-Sept 07- Present- working in Nanaimo BC at 
marine training facility (Safer Ocean Systems) Safety
& training Jones Marine Services, (coastal tugs & crew boats),
while also offering approved training courses for professional
mariners. (Chartwork, Colregs, Basic Safety Course, stability,
& GMDSS Sea Area A1 radio courses.)

March 03-Sep 05-
Port Capt/Senior Master, High Speed
Craft Training Officer Nanaimo Vancouver high speed
ferry service. Wrote TC approved High Speed Craft Training
Course, provided high speed craft type rating (ratings) on
behalf of TC. Took over the ship after refit, hired & trained
crew & put vessel through statutory approval procedures.
3000 crossings of Georgia Strait as master of high speed ferries.

Oct 01-March 03- Caspian Sea;
Provided contract marine
safety training, oil rig emergency ice evacuation using amphibious
escape vehicles. Also basic safety, HUET and Fast Rescue
Craft training

June-Oct 01- Master of transpacific fibre optic cable guard
ship stationed 50 miles off C.Flattery.

April-June 01- Taught numerous marine courses on
Vancouver Island under the name Safer Ocean Systems
(SOS) TC approved training provider.

March 00-April 00- Taught my watch keeping mate/Fishing
Master Class 3 course for North Island College in Courtenay.

Feb. 00-March 00- Delivered Marine Emergency Duties A-1
Basic Safety Courses at the Navy Fleet School in Esquimalt
for BC Ferries. This set up Camosun College to offer MED training.

Aug 99-Dec 99- Seamanship instructor at BCIT/PMTC.
Instructing Bridge watchman Course in compliance with STCW,
Transport Canada, and ISO/ISM standards. Instructed Marine
Emergency Courses including A1, and B1 lifesaving appliances
courses.

Oct.97-Aug 99- Twenty-month contract with PT AlatieF P&O
in New Guinea. Stood by the construction (Singmarine Shipyard,
Singapore) of two tug/barge self-unloading composite units
(pusher tug & barge). I accepted the ships as master and delivered
them to Irian Jaya, New Guinea (+/-2200 miles). Trained the crews
and commissioned the vessels as lightering units and offshore
loading of bulk carriers and discharge of tankers/bulkers.
The first barge is an 8,000 tonne dwt coal/oil (OBO) vessel used
to transport fuel from ships offshore. The second is an 18,000
tonne concentrate barge used to load copper concentrate offshore.
My job involved shipyard trials, liaison with DNV, getting new
ships ready for sea, organizing of crews, and preparing procedures
in line with the STCW, ISM, BC & ISO codes for the safe operation
of ships. Post commissioning I was training master for the operation,
including prep of load/discharge plans, etc.

The pusher tugs are 1000 tonnes, DNV class, Schottel 360¼ drives,
5500 HP(CAT) with crews of 19-25 men; barge thrusters are
Schottel 1000 hp.. This job emphasized the writing of manuals
and organizing compliance with the International Safety
Management Code (ISM Code). I left P&O as superintendent,
safety environment & training handing over my duties to my
national understudy.  P&O operates the port and infrastructure
for Freeport-Mac Moran Copper & Gold.


1997- Training officer BC Ferries, Horseshoe Bay, seamanship
instructor at Pacific Marine Training Campus of BCIT. Teaching
entry-level courses, M.E.D., and the BCF Lifeboat Course.


1996- July to December-master in lieu of  pilot on 1500 tonne
220ft megayacht on BC cruise, then chief officer/navigator on
this vessel on a South Pacific cruise.


1995- Master of a Korean-owned long line-fishing vessel
engaged in experimental skate fishery.1994- instructor nautical
courses for the Native Fisherman's Training & Development
Society, and relief master MV Forest Transporter (100 landing
ship, BC Coast).


1993- Engaged in an attempt to reinstate a Nanaimo/Vancouver
passenger fast-ferry.


1992- Senior Captain, Royal Sea Link Express catamaran
ferry Orca Spirit, passenger high-speed service between Nanaimo
Vancouver (Kvaerner Fjellstrand 40m Flying Cat). Special duties
included crew training and liaison with Transport Canada Marine
Safety on crew issues.

1991- Instructor my Watchkeeping Mate/ FM3 course, Comox
Mall as BC Maritime Academy in cooperation with North Island
College, and relief Master on the dragger Kella Lee.

1990- Master F/V Beowulf offshore automated longline vessel
(summer). Chief Officer with BC Stena Line on the vessels Crown
Princess Victoria & Vancouver Island Princess, operating between
Seattle & Victoria (September to December when the company
folded).  ISM Lead Auditor Course, Ferraby_Stebbing UK.


Prior to 1990- Chief Officer with Royal Volker Stevin operating
large trailing suction hopper dredges (10,000t) building islands
in the Canadian Arctic for the purpose of oil exploration.
During the winter season taught nautical courses at Pacific
Marine Training Institute, mainly WKM/FM3 navigation,
chartwork stability modules.
Prior to this time I built and operated a 63ft fishing schooner
out of Comox,BC. Off seasons I worked as mate on local ferries
and studied for nautical certificates. Before that I worked on
various local & foreign ships and owned several fishing vessels.

A seasoned mariner with nearly 50 years’ experience from
apprentice through ship's master, and senior administrative
positions in the shipping industry.
